PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The neighborhood of Port Richmond was the site of a deadly police officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning.

It happened around 8:45 a.m., according to police, when some neighbors were arguing with a man near the intersection of Belgrade and Venango streets. The nature of the argument is unclear.

When officers officers arrived on the scene, the people arguing with the man said, "Officer, that's him. That's him."

A woman inside a nearby rowhome, either a grandmother or a mother with a school-aged child, opened her door to see what the commotion was, and the man in question ran inside. The police officer on the scene followed him inside.

Police say that the officer pulled out his Taser, yelling to the man, "Show me your hands! Show me your hands!"

Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said that the intruder pulled out a knife. The officer then holstered his Taser, pulled out his service revolver, and fired, telling the man to drop the knife.

The man lunged at the 16-year veteran of the police force, and the officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the chest. Police say he was pronounced dead after being rushed to Temple University Hospital.

Police are still trying to determine the identity of the dead man. No one else was hurt in the commotion.
