PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Another child has been shot and killed in Philadelphia, this time an 11-year-old boy — and his 19 year-old brother is in custody.

Police were called to the house in the 5700 block of Haddington Lane in Overbrook just before noon. Acting Police Commissioner Christine Coulter says in the dining room, officers found a boy shot.

"When they arrived, they found a young male inside the house. He was 11 years old. He was shot — a gunshot wound to the chest. Taken immediately to Lankenau Hospital and taken to surgery, where he did not survive," she said.

Coulter says police believe the 19-year-old was responsible for the shooting, but it’s unclear whether it was intentional or accidental.

Coulter says the 19-year-old ran from the house after the shooting to get help. He was taken into custody a few blocks away.

"Hopefully he’ll be able to clear up the pieces that we can’t figure out. But we’re not looking for anybody else at this point. We believe that he is responsible. And as for whether it was intentional or accidental will be a result of the investigation," she added.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The name of the victim has not been released. Coulter says she doesn’t remember a time when so many children were the victims of gunfire.

"In the last month we’ve had three children — young children — murdered. Another child shot, a similar age to this little boy here. Just way more frequency than I ever remembered," she said.
