PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - Beer lovers in our area and across the country are celebrating the start of the American Craft Beer Week on Monday.

This won't be nearly the size and scope of the upcoming Philly Beer Week celebration but Craftbeer.com's Andy Sparhawk says you'll still find plenty of taverns and brew pubs offering discounted beers by going to the website.

"There we have a brewery finder," he said. "Just click near me and it'll provide a list of breweries in your area and hopefully they'll have something specific going on for American Craft Beer Week."

This year organizers are urging people to only drink beer baring the Independent Craft Brewer seal in support of more than 6,000 local brewers who are facing increasing challenges from their predatory multi-national competitors.

The seal symbolizes how the craft beer movement has turned the industry upside down.

"It wasn't that long ago, 2-3 decades ago that beer in America was a joke," he said. "So you have all these craft beer fans that want to celebrate and salute the independents."

Sparhawk says large companies such as Anheuser Busch has been buying up craft brewers.

"They're also buying up home brew shops to try to have this whole vertical integration," he said. "It's real scary."

The 13th annual American Craft Beer Week will run until May 20.
