PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 14-year-old is critically injured in a shooting in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood right before the kickoff of the new school year.

Authorities say he was shot in the back of his head in a playground just outside of W.C. Longstreth Elementary School after 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The young man is in extremely critical condition.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Lee Strollo said the details are limited.

"We believe it happened in the school yard. It appears some other people who were in the area moved him out of the street, which is where found him and took him to the hospital," Strollo said.

He said they are not sure if the teen was the intended target.

Jasmine Bell, who lives in the neighborhood, clutched on to her young daughter as she grieved for the young man.

"I'm just praying for peace, just peace," she said.

As police search surveillance video for clues, the teen's shooter remains on the loose.
