PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Halloween tragedy that sent two children to the hospital with gun shot wounds is turning into a Christmas miracle.

On Halloween, five-year-old Mael and his 14-year-old sister Makiyah were shot while out trick-or-treating.

The tragedy shook Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood to the core.

When Yuri Bell heard about what happened, she reached out to the kids' mom, Dominique Wise, to see what she could do to help.

"I gave her a call and we started talking and I found out that they were living in a basement. It just breaks my heart, I can't even explain it," Bell said.

That's when Yuri realized the task of helping this family required more than what she could do on her own.

"I said 'I'm not going to be able to make a difference in her life just by giving her gifts for Christmas, this woman needs a home, she needs something to provide for her son who now is in a wheelchair due to this gun violence,'" she said.

Dominique Wise mother of 3; Maliya-3yrs, Mael-5yrs, Makiya-14 . On October 31, 2018, Mael and Makiya were caught in a crossfire and shot while out for Halloween. Ms. Wise was already facing hard times and working on getting her kids a place to call home. After the shooting, things went down hill for her and her children. Her kids, nervous to live in the same neighborhood, she had to leave and is now in an basement of family with no beds or much of anything. Mael is unable to walk and now in a wheel chair. This family is suffering but undergoing counseling and still remain in good spirits! So Yuri turned to social media with the help of a friend.

The GoFundMe campaign raised thousands of dollars in less than 24 hours.

Dominique says although her daughter is getting used to walking without a cane and her five-year-old son has to learn to walk again, she's beyond grateful.

"A little bit of income has not gone far for 4 people. Its been rough, so it was a like a breath of fresh air. A light in darkness," she said.

Dominique's story has picked up traction from local celebrities like Meek Mill and PnB Rock, who want to help. Someone also donated a mattress so the kids would no longer have to sleep on the floor.

One mother's plea for another mother may help give this family the Christmas they deserve.
