Vehicle fire on Woodhaven Rd. exit of I-95

UPDATE: 3.30 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — PennDOT says the Northbound I-95 ramp to Woodhaven Road (Route 63) is expected to remain closed until Friday night in the wake of a tanker truck fire Thursday morning.

A contractor is making road and guide rail repairs caused by the fire.

The ramp from Eastbound Woodhaven Road (Route 63) to Northbound I-95 is expected to reopen sometime Thursday night.

PennDOT advises northbound I-95 drivers to use Academy Road and U.S.13 (Frankford Avenue/Bristol Pike) or Route 132 (Street Road) and U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike) as alternate routes.

Bensalem Public Safety director Fred Harran said the truck caught fire around 10:30 Thursday morning, while carrying 3,000 gallons of what he is told was commercial fuel.

Authorities are still trying to figure out what caused that huge fire.

"We've asked local schools to cancel any outdoor recesses, just because of the fumes, the smell and the smoke," Harran said. He also suggested that nearby residents keep their windows closed to reduce their exposure to fumes.

The fuel truck ended up on its side on the ramp, crushing part of the guardrail, and it appears that flames spread across the ramp into an area of brush next to the road.

Firefighters used foam to get the flames under control.
