PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Local mothers struggling with breast milk issues or women who want to donate milk have more options now: Three new donor depots have opened in the area to offer some help.

"It's women helping women with compromised babies," said Breastfeeding Resource Center Director Colette Acker, who heads facilities in Abington and Wayne.

The efforts produced at the center go toward helping hospitalized infants who are born prematurely and in need.

"Mom's milk is the best, but if she can't get any out then donor milk is really necessary," she added.

Three depots in the area will help the Mid-Atlantic Mothers' Milk Bank in Pittsburgh as it supplies hospitals for neonatal intensive care units around the country. The screening process is already underway.

"Moms have to get blood work done. They want to make sure they aren't on any medications and make sure that the milk is safe for premature babies," Acker noted of donors.

Another depot, Lifecycle WomanCare, is located in Bryn Mawr.
