PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities were on the scene Monday afternoon responding to a police-involved shooting in Tacony.

Philadelphia narcotics officers were serving a warrant for 36-year-old Jeffrey Dennis on Cottage Street when they saw their suspect in a Toyota Camry.

They followed Dennis to Hegerman Street and Princeton Avenue, where officers got out of their vehicle.

A total of six police officers in three unmarked cop cars attempted to block Dennis' path on Hegerman Street.

Around 4 p.m., Philadelphia Police Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said Dennis failed to comply with officers to shut the engine off, and began striking the unmarked police vehicles. One officer shattered the driver's side window of the Camry, during which another officer was struck by the car.

The officer was injured but he is in stable condition.

"During the course of these events, another officer," explained Kinebrew, "did discharge his firearm three times, striking the suspect."

The suspect was hit in the head and arm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other officers were injured during the ordeal — one with injuries to his legs, one to his hands, and one to his arm. All three officers were transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital and are expected to be OK.

The police-involved shooting team is investigating the incident.

Neighbors said shootings and other incidents like this happen far too often in this area.

"It's getting crazy around here," said one man, who asked to remain anonymous. "You don't know what to do anymore."

"It's dangerous out here," added neighbor Janaa Smith. "It's real violent — everybody needs to stay safe and be careful."
