PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Six children are dead after what appears to be a viral outbreak at a North Jersey medical facility.

The New Jersey Department of Health says 18 patients in total contracted the adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Passaic County.

The virus affects the eyes, intestines and the nervous and respiratory system.

The state has told the facility not to admit any more patients until the outbreak ends.

Adenovirus usually causes mild illness in children, but the health department says this strain can be more aggressive and affects children with compromised immune systems.

The New Jersey health department has a team on site to investigate the outbreak.
