AAA Mid-Atlantic urging drivers to be prepared as winter storm approaches

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- With the upcoming winter storm, AAA Mid-Atlantic is urging drivers to be prepared in the event you are stranded. 

Kathleen Miller with AAA says so one ever plans on getting stranded.

"And so AAA encourages anyone with a car battery more than three years old to get it checked before temperatures drop," she said.

In addition, Miller says a preparedness kit or at least your trunk should contain non-perishable snacks, water, a blanket, and an extra coat. A shovel and A bag of kitty litter could be of useful to help tires gain traction in ice and snow.

She says make sure you have plenty of windshield washing fluid, keep your tank full and your cell phone charged. And if do get stuck and you're waiting for help to arrive...

"Conserve gas, because you will need to stay warm," Miller said. "Let the car run for maybe five to ten minutes. Warm things up, charge your phone if you need to, and then shut it off."
