MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The superintendent of Abington School District is retiring.

Amy Sichel has been with the Abington School District for 42 years, 18 of those as superintendent. In a letter to parents, students and staff, Sichel said she plans to retire effective Nov. 9.

School board President Ray McGarry said they'll meet in an executive session to discuss internal candidates for the position, and they will publicly speak on their plans and options at the next school board meeting on Aug. 14.

The announcement of Sichel’s retirement comes months after controversy over a $25 million gift from billionaire and Abington Senior High School graduate Stephen Schwarzman. The money was initially announced as a gift to develop the school's science and technology departments, but sparked a firestorm when the board voted to re-name the school after Schwarzman with little to no notice.
