PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The ball was flying out of the yard in Collegeville on Thursday.

Division III Ursinus College hit five home runs in a 22-9 Centennial Conference victory over Muhlenberg.

Two of those home runs came off the bat of junior outfielder Alex Mumme.  With those two home runs, Mumme set the single-season (with 10) and career (22) Ursinus home run records.

"It's still kind of not reality," Mumme said of setting the records. "I really can't believe that it's been like this this season. Just putting together a good at bat every day. I can't believe it. I would never think that I would come here and break these records like I did. It's kind of overwhelming, but it's awesome."

As impressive as the home run numbers are for Mumme, they are only a piece of his offensive puzzle. He is batting .396 for his career with 51 doubles. This season, his batting average is .425 and he has knocked in a team-high 39 runs.

"I'm not focused on trying to hit a home run every time," he said. "We just pride ourselves here at Ursinus on making hard contact every time, and whatever happens, happens. You're not forcing yourself to hit home runs. It's supposed to just come naturally, and luckily for me it seems to have come a little naturally."

While setting records like this will bring a lot of attention on an individual player like Mumme, he said he couldn't do what he is doing without his coaches and teammates.

"They both work really hard every day to push me to be a better player," he added. "They never give up and they never turn their eye or their head away. They always make sure that everything is done right and they just push me to be better every day.

"I don't think I'd be where I am now without my teammates or my coaches."

Mumme and the Bears return to action on Saturday, visiting McDaniel.
