HARRISBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The latest increase in Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls takes effect this Sunday.

Stemming in part from its obligation to raise hundreds of millions of dollars each year for transportation needs around the state, and in recent years, for mass transit mostly, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced last summer that another 6-percent increase in tolls would take effect this coming Sunday.

In November, Gov. Tom Wolf in an interview said that he believes the annual toll hikes are "burdensome" and "unsustainable." But for now, motorists paying cash especially will have to dig deeper into their pockets to drive the Turnpike, paying $2.25 for the most common passenger vehicle trip, from one exchange to the next. E-Z Pass customers get a break, paying $1.38 for the same trip.
