'Ant-Man and the Wasp' buzzes to $76 million debut

July 08, 2018 - 1:16 pm

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Sequels and prequels dominated the box office over the weekend.

"Ant-Man and the Wasp," the fantasy sequel starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, led the way in its debut weekend. It opened with typical Marvel might at the box office, with an estimated $76 million in ticket sales.

The "Ant-Man" sequel easily surpassed the $57 million debut of the 2015 original in North America.

The runner-up was the animated adventure "Incredibles 2," earning about $29 million. The sequel became Pixar's top-grossing film domestically — not accounting for inflation — surpassing  "Finding Dory."

Last weekend's leader — the dinosaur thriller "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" — fell to third place, taking in $29 million as well, and totaling past the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Fourth place belongs to the horror-thriller prequel "The First Purge," which took in $17 million.

No other title surpassed the $10 million mark.

Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly ahead of those of last weekend, but slightly below those of the same weekend last year.
