PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Carson Wentz was likely bracing for the surreal feeling of stepping onto the field where his season came to an end in 2017.

He may not get the opportunity.

On Wednesday, head coach Doug Pederson announced Wentz would miss practice due to a back injury. Pederson said it was not an injury that occurred during the loss to Dallas on Sunday. When asked if Wentz will definitely be able to play on Sunday in Los Angeles, Pederson offered no guarantees and said they would take things day-by-day with their quarterback.

"Carson has a little bit of back soreness and a little tightness," said Pederson. "We're going to rest him today, continue to evaluate him and just make sure he's good. We'll have more information on all of the guys later in the week."

While the Eagles are not giving details about Wentz's availability, a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said Wentz was not expected to play this week and could be shut down for the year.

The injury seems to have been an issue for Wentz ever since his return. Twice in October, Wentz was listed as limited in practice because of his back.

"Sometimes he just gets a little sore and a little tight," Pederson added. "We're just going to rest him today and evaluate him further. It's nothing game-related. He's just dealt with it, so we'll just continue to evaluate."

If Wentz was able to play on Sunday, he would be back in the same stadium where he tore his knee a year ago. It was a bittersweet afternoon last December when the Eagles lost Wentz but defeated the Rams to clinch the NFC East title. It would be interesting to see Wentz's reaction returning to the field at the LA Coliseum.

Now, Wentz may not get the chance.

"There could probably be some angst and maybe a little anxiety," said Pederson. "We won this game last year as a team. All three phases were exceptional. They really rallied around him last year at this time. There's probably a lot more positive coming out of last year's game than anything else."

But there are no positives Wednesday about Wentz's injury, which would be another symbol of a season that seems to be headed to an end before the playoffs get underway.

If Wentz is lost for this game and perhaps the season, it will be part of an injury-riddled 2018 campaign for the defending world champions.

It would be understandable if Pederson may feel a bit snake-bit this season.

"It's a lot of guys," Pederson said. "As far as starters go, you look around and it feels that way."
