VENTNOR CITY, NJ (KYW Newsradio) — The summer season looks to get underway down the shore and there’s a new law in effect this year — no smoking or vaping on New Jersey beaches.

“I don’t see no signs that there is no smoking on Ventnor Beach or any beach,” said Ron, an ice cream man.

Those on the beach like Ron say they haven’t seen any posted signs that indicate a smoking ban on beaches is in effect.

Some beachgoers think the statewide law is ridiculous.

“Are they going to come down and arrest people smoking? Or fine somebody for smoking,” one man asked.

It’s more like a fine.

“Good luck with that,” he replied. “Tax dollars well at work.”

Others like Marc say they are breathing easier.

“It blows in your face, you exhale it. It’s horrible. Second hand smoke,” he said.

If caught smoking the first offense is a $250 fine, which can go up to $1,000 — if you are caught three times.
