READING, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Murder charges have been filed against a Berks County woman whose children were found hanging in the basement of her home.

On Sept. 23, Lisa Snyder called 9-1-1 and said she’d found her 8-year-old son and her 4-year-old daughter hanging from each end of a wire dog lead that was strung over a beam in their basement, with two chairs tipped over below them.

They were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

According to the criminal complaint, the 36-year-old mother of those children told state police her son had mentioned suicide in the past, upset because he was bullied over his weight and what’s described as "below-average motor skills."

But the criminal complaint says multiple school officials and family members who knew the boy say he never mentioned bullying or hurting himself.

Snyder told investigators she had just bought the wire dog lead that morning, and her son asked to take it, and two bar-height kitchen chairs down to the basement to build a fort.

The complaint also says that, in the days leading up the children's deaths, there were searches under Snyder's Google account including, "carbon monoxide in a car how long to die" and "hanging yourself." On the day of the children's deaths, there was also a search for "does a hybrid car produce carbon monoxide while idling."

An occupational therapist who worked with the boy questioned his ability to stand on a chair to string the dog lead. According to her, he would bump into desks and chairs just walking in the classroom.
