PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) The Beneficial Plaza played host to Billie Jean King and the Philadelphia Freedoms' pop-up tennis clinic on Thursday afternoon.

During the clinic, anybody walking down the street could come and take a swing and get a good volley going.

"I was just on my break, hit a couple quick balls. It was great," said one participant.

"Hey, it made my day. It really did. People just need to stop for 10 seconds and just have fun, and that's what it was all about," said another.

Freedoms owner King even got in on the action, playing with and teaching the kids. She says it's important to get them interested in a new activities.

"It really can be inspiring, and if you see it, you can be it," King said.

King says the benefits of tennis are immense, and she's happy to be on the street spreading the good word.

"You learn how to be a leader, then you learn how to support, and that's what's really important," King said. "Most people think tennis is an individual sport. It's actually more team play in tennis than anything else."

The Freedoms' home opener is July 19 at Saint Joseph's University.
