PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are searching for who left a body inside a burning car in South Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Shortly before noon, police received a call about smoke coming from a white Jeep parked in the lot of an abandoned Toys’R’Us, located near the popular Oregon Diner at Third Street and Oregon Avenue.

When they got to the scene, officers found a 43-year-old unresponsive man wrapped in a blanket in the trunk. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Steve, who did not want to use his last name, rushed to the scene when he realized that man was one of his close friends.

“My wife saw my buddy’s Jeep on the news. She sent it to me,” he said. “We actually build homes together. He owns real estate … It's devastating. He was a great dude, an outstanding person.”

Police are investigating this as a murder. They are looking at surveillance video from nearby businesses to try to figure out what happened.
