NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A breast implant recall announced on Wednesday has prompted lots of phone calls from worried plastic surgery patients, and a local surgeon says it's important to know what's been placed in your body.

"We've been getting so many phone calls from everyone that is just so worried," said Dr. Steven Davis about Wednesday's recall of Allergan breast implants.

He says the implant in question is textured as opposed to smooth.

"They actually liked the idea of this aggressive texturing because it held the implant in place better,” he said.

However, these textured implants have been associated with a type of man-made cancer known as breast implant associated large cell lymphoma, or ALCL.

"I think there's about 116 new cases that have been discovered globally and approximately 24 deaths since earlier this year around the world," Davis said.

If you're concerned, he says, the first thing you should do is find the paperwork or call your surgeon to verify the type and brand of implant you have.

"The biggest concern I feel is trying to make sure that they know what's inside of them," he added.

If you experience any symptoms like sudden swelling or pain, particularly if you've had implants for at least 15 years or so, he says, you should see a doctor right away.
