PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Birds chirping, a warm summer breeze, and sunshine are not things most office workers can enjoy during their work day.

Outdoor sporting goods retailer L. L. Bean is looking to change that by encouraging workers across Philadelphia to leave the cubical behind and to work outside.

"The outdoors makes almost everyone happier," said Eric Smith at L. L. Bean. "It also is less stressful. It makes people more productive and more creative."

Smith says for the next few days, folks can come down to the Navy Yard and try out a free temporary outdoor work space.

"You've got desks, you've got chairs, comfortable lounge seating, you've got white board, conference spaces, but it's all outside in the sunshine," he said. "We've also got shade. There is a lovely breeze coming off of the water."

Smith says this new work space is a nod to the past.

"For thousands of years, outdoors was the work place. It's only been in the last few hundred years where technology has really brought us inside and kept us inside. Now technology allows us to be anywhere," he said.

Grace Lutz gave it a try. She says the wifi, electrical outlets and shaded work spaces make the outdoor space the ideal office.

"It's amazing," she said. "You feel refreshed and excited and more entergetic just getting some sunlight and being able to be outside with the wind and the beautiful view. It's great."

Aisha Cooper says this is a work environment she can get used to.

"To get outside while you can work, and just enjoy the atmosphere — it's just the perfect time to do it."

The outdoor office comes equipped with wi-fi, and electrical outlets. Cooper said the stationary bikes help add a nice flow to the work day.

"I'm peddling as I'm working," she said, "so I'm burning calories while I'm sitting here typing, doing my job."

Smith says their outdoor office is available rain or shine, as long as the rain is not too heavy.
