TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A bridge over I-295 in Gloucester County is being replaced, and it’ll take awhile to complete.

Traffic patterns have changed for the first part of the Route 47 bridge reconstruction in Westville.

“They’ve created a center work zone to allow the gas utility to do work on the gas main,” New Jersey Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Schapiro told KYW Newsradio. “That work’s going to take several weeks and it’s underway as we speak and once that completes, we’ll move into the reconstruction of the route 47 bridge."

That’ll come in two stages.

“They’ll demolish the west side, reconstruct it,” Schapiro added. “Once it’s completed, they’ll shift traffic over onto that completed bridge deck and then move the work on to the east side to replace the bridge deck on that side as well."

Not only are crews replacing the decking, but they’re raising vertical clearance over I-295 by more than two feet to meet current standards.

The $7.7 million project will take about two years to finish.

Some 12,000 cars use the Route 47 bridge on any given day.
