PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  On the first day of Phillies workouts, Bryce Harper was happy to be back at the ballpark, and the slugger said he’s been ready for the return of baseball throughout the break.

“I’m excited to be back here. I’m excited to be part of this season. I can’t wait to get started, I didn’t really stop. I hit three times a week, I worked out. I tried to keep in that same mindset, the same mind frame,” he said.

The players returned after a bitter battle off the field with the owners, and Harper said he understands the sports needs to come back for the sake of the game and a nation dealing with a pandemic.

“I think everybody can say that the game is hurting right now. We need to get back on the field and try to turn that page as quick as possible and grow this game as best we can. People want to see us play,” Harper said.

While clubhouse officials were wearing masks, the players did not have masks on as they went through a workout during an afternoon of sweltering heat.

“I think it’s very hard for people to work out with masks on. I’ve heard of people passing out with these things on and things like that. I think that’s the major thing right now," he said.
