PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An orchestra of whistlers is being assembled in Philadelphia for an upcoming project.

Mimi Drummond, who holds world titles, has been whistling professionally on and off since 1980.

"Those of us who whistle just enjoy it," she said. "It's something that you do unconsciously while you're physically working on something else and then you whistle because there is music inside of you and then it comes out."

She will be participating in The Whistling Orchestra of Philadelphia, the name of the project by the Temple Contemporary Art Gallery within Temple University's Tyler School of Art.

Director Rob Blackson said you don't have to be a champion whistler like Drummond to audition.

"If you love whistling and enjoy it, we want you," he said. "The Whistling Orchestra of Philadelphia will have 30 whistlers. We have 15 so far. So we are halfway there with Mimi in the lead."

The performance will be on March 16 at Christ Church Neighborhood House in Old City. You can find more information at the orchestra’s website.
