CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A Camden County doctor has found that humor can be a big help when treating his cancer patients.

A cancer diagnoses is frightening, but a gynecologic oncologist is using humor to help his patients cope.

Dr. Howard Saul at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center says one prop he likes makes a funny noise.

"I start my examination and say, 'look at my nose,' and then I put the duck whistle in and go quack, quack. They crack up right away, and right away it lowers the tension, not only that, I found out by doing the duck whistle, I'm really checking their cranial nerves," he said.

He also uses magic and card tricks to lighten the mood and keep his patients entertained.

He says it doesn't take away from the serious issues being discussed and treated, but it does help calm his patients' anxieties.

He also takes his show on the road to pediatric units and hospice patients.
