PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The popular gelato store Capogiro Gelato, which received worldwide accolades and was part of the Midtown Village renaissance, will be closing all its stores midnight on Sunday.

The news of the closures came Friday morning.

Rebecca Jervis, manager of Capogiro on 13th Street, confirmed that owner Stephanie Reitano informed employees abruptly that they would be closing all of their gelato stores within days.

"She looked very, very distraught," said Jervis. "She had to fire employees that had been working for her for about 15 years."

Madeline Jenkins, a shift supervisor, found out about the closing by accident.

"I actually came in here to pick up my check," she said. Her next scheduled shift wasn't until Monday at 7 a.m.

Capogiro was identified by National Geographic in 2011 as one of the top 10 best places in the world to eat ice cream.

Employees say Capofitto, the sister store in Old City, never truly really recovered from a fire around the block earlier this year, coupled with street construction that more or less shut down walk-in business.
