PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It was a magical evening for hundreds of patients at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Thursday.

Seventeen-year-old Tommy was looking sharp in his vest and tie as he attended his fifth CHOP Prom.

"It's really a great way for us all to get out of our rooms and have some fun and kind of just forget about everything for a little while," he said.

And that's exactly the goal of this glamorous event, said CHOP certified child life specialist Jessica Johnson.
"It's a night where you feel like you're not in the hospital," she said. "You feel like you're at a party hanging out with friends, hanging out with other kids dancing and having a good time."

The girls got their hair, makeup and nails done ahead of prom, and the guys got some fresh haircuts as well.

She said the event isn't just rewarding for the kids, but for the staff, too.

"I'm just smiling and laughing all night long, even at the beginning of the day when we're getting all this stuff together," she added, "kids are getting excited about what they're going to wear."
