PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A North Philadelphia charter school was closed Wednesday after a fire broke out in the building Tuesday night.

Instead of students and staffers, a fire restoration team was hard at work at the People for People Charter School, at Broad and Brown streets, close to Fairmount Avenue.

The School District of Philadelphia says there was a fire inside the building sometime late Tuesday night. Firefighters were on the scene and got everything under control. No one was hurt.

Because of the damage from the flames and the water that was needed to put the fire out, officials say they needed to cancel classes and after-school activities.

This closure affects 540 students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as their families, who had to scramble because of how late the fire was and the announcement that there was no school. It is not yet clear when the school will re-open.
