PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a terrible highway accident in Chester County on Wednesday.

Three people were killed, and eight others were injured, after a passenger van careened off of Rte. 1 in Chester County in a heavy downpour and came to rest on its roof.

Pennsylvania State Police say it happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and closed the highway for hours.

Troopers say the impact of the crash caused some passengers to be thrown from the van into the trees on the shoulder of the road. The van also crashed into the highway sign for London Grove and Toughkenamon Road and took out some of its supports.

Police say the eight injured passengers have been transported to Christiana Hospital and Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

State police say more information will be released later.
