PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A tax preparation program that helps low-income households is looking for volunteers to help them help others.

The Community Action Agency of Delaware County does free tax filings for people who make less than $56,000 a year.

As they get ready to take on hundreds of clients from Jan. 27 through April 15, they're asking for folks to donate their time to help them complete that mission.

"They don't really need tax background, but it helps if they're familiar with tax returns and they've got an attention to detail, and they have a good rapport working with people," said the group's Patricia Haynes.

Haynes says they usually get volunteers from local universities and law schools, but they're asking for the general public's help too.

"We assist with the certification. It's an online process through the IRS website," she added.

Haynes says the program also has some benefits for the volunteers.

"There is always something you don't know about taxes, so it helps them personally too," she said.

The program, which has four different locations throughout the county, is appointment only as they work to make sure they properly service all their clients.
