SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The weather could have been better this holiday weekend, but Jersey shore merchants are generally pleased with the start to their season.

Despite a rainy Sunday, the Memorial Day crowds on the Ocean City boardwalk have been pretty good, according to Joe Leveille, manager of the Shades sunglasses shop.

"This is a good indicator of how things are going to go, and I'm not really disappointed so far," he said.

Neither is Steel's Fudge owner George Steel, who said the busiest days are yet to come.

"It's a test," he explained. "It gets you ready for the summertime, which really begins July Fourth weekend."

At the Shirt Shack, owner Brent Hanley said he's getting a read on what inventory is moving. It's not sweatshirts or rain gear this year, but girls' crop tops that are the big sellers.

"It's just nice to see what's selling and see what people — what kind of mood they're in and what they're looking at," he said. "It does give you a gauge of what you'll buy later on for the summer."
