PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Monday was a busy morning for early holiday getaway travelers at Philadelphia International Airport. Thousands flocked to the airport before dawn to queue up in crowded check-in lines. Most of them had packed their patience.

Melissa from Warrington was heading south to enjoy the warmth of this holiday season, literally.

"We're heading to Key Largo!" she said. "We're just celebrating the Christmas and New Year with my fiancé and my soon-to-be in-laws."

But that's not all, Melissa says.

"And I was injured today. I fell on a wet floor, so I’m heading out in a wheelchair.’

No worries, she says. She's getting on that plane.

Rita from Philadelphia was also heading to a warmer climate. She’s spending the holidays in Thailand.

"My dad lives there," she said. She says she last saw him two years ago.

Rita says she is excited to be making the trip, but the the long flight is a challenge.

"We won't be there until Christmas morning at 2:35," she said.

It's not just the long distance she is facing. She's taking three different planes to get there.

Despite the challenge, however, Rita says seeing dad and other family members is worth it.
