SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead after two cars violently collided Monday morning.

A Kia minivan and a Ford Mustang collided at the corner of 63rd Street and Passyunk Avenue. After the accident, the driver of the Mustang lost control and crashed into two poles before coming to a stop, and the driver of the Kia took off.

"This is definitely a high-impact accident. It appears speed may be a factor, because there was such severe damage done to the Mustang," explained Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police are searching for the driver of the minivan who police said fled the scene.

"According to witnesses, the driver exited the car and then fled on foot," he added.

Small said they found the vehicles and the area around them in disarray.

"Fire department paramedics has to cut the roof off of the Mustang in order to get the driver and the passenger out," he said. "The driver was pronounced dead on the scene."

Police are talking to witnesses and combing through surveillance video to try to figure out what happened, as well as the identity of the driver of the minivan.
