Fitness expert offers tips for Broad Street Run participants

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The 2019 Broad Street Run is set for Sunday morning with thousands of people planning on making the 10-mile trek through the heart of Philadelphia. 

Runners have more than likely been training for this run for months already, but the week of the race and day before may be a little tricky as runners don't want to do too much or too little. 

Michelle Bauer owns Nex Level Fitness in Doylestown and Chalfont. She recommends taking it easy the day before, and maybe opting for a massage and stretching over a workout. Bauer also says hydration is something runners should be focused on, as well as eating healthy.

"I never really carb-load before a race," Bauer said. "It tends to make me feel a little heavier, I don't seem to have much more energy that next day anyway. I just stay in balance. I stay lean protein, good healthy carbs. I think food quality is different than the amount of food you eat."

As for the day of the race, she recommends eating about an hour and a half before the start.

"Something light. Peanut butter and jelly has always been my go to before a race day," Bauer said. "Then make sure I'm at the race about an hour before so I can stretch and warm up and just get a light jog in and get my body moving."

When it's all over, Bauer says it's important to keep moving so your muscles don't lock up, and maybe plan a good stretch session later that evening.
