PHILADELPHIA (WIP Sportsradio) — Following their firing of Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Hextall on Monday, the Philadlephia Flyers hosted a news conference on Tuesday to clarify the move.

Flyers President Paul Holmgren, with Dave Scott, CEO of Comcast Spectacor, the Flyers' parent company, took the podium to explain.

Holmgren used the word "unyielding" repeatedly when referring to Hextall's unwillingness to alter his strategy. Hextall had a long-term approach, said Holmgren, but the core team isn't getting any younger, and they're thinking more in the here and now, as opposed to several years down the road. Because of Hextall's unwillingness to change, Holmgren said he went to Scott with the idea of moving on from Hextall.

Many may have thought that head coach Dave Hakstol might have been the one to go instead of the general manager or that they would be fired together. Holmgren said his fate would be left to the new general manager. When that hire is made, the new GM is likely he will want to bring on their own head coach. So, in this case, that means Hakstal would be out, which means he will be a lame duck until the new GM is hired.
