BUCKS COUNTY (KYW Newsradio) — A Bucks County funeral director has pleaded guilty to stealing about $300,000 people who pre-paid for funeral expenses, as well as forging death certificates.

David Faust, owner of Faust Funeral Home in Hulmeville, pleaded guilty to nine charges, including theft by deception, forgery and tampering with public records.

Bucks County prosecutor Marc Furber said Faust took payments ranging from $400 to $14,000 from more than 50 people, but then never reported those funds. Some families didn’t find out until their family member died.

"They just had no monies available to be able to bury their loved one, and it’s just really mind boggling," he said.

Furber said Faust forged doctors' signatures on death certificates. He also forged a death certificate of a woman who was still alive so he could withdraw the money from her account.

"We were shocked to learn she was alive and well, and she was in fact shocked to find there had been a death certificate issued in her name," Furber added.

Faust also pleaded guilty to collecting more than $100,000 in Social Security disability benefits while still working.
