New mothers are looking for greater options to birthing and Muhammad says she is helping to put the conscious in conscious birthing by refocusing on the mother.

Muhammad says it's about normalizing the process.

"We specialize in normal birth, so the normal physiological process of being pregnant, giving birth to about 6 weeks.

Conscious birthing means building a lasting connection with the mother before, during and after the birth. That relationship lowers the likelihood of fetal fatality.

"It's about relationship building and the statistics that we have of black women dying at three times the rate of their white counterparts has to due to with the discrimination in the actual care model."

Muhammad says midwifery can bring more healthy babies into the world by following a healthcare model that follows the mother more closely.
