In Old City, at Barry's Buns, the hard part is already done for you, since the gingerbread house is already built. For $75 you'll get all the elements for the decorating, and you get expert advice.

Eleven-year-old Marisa Maisano, of South Philadelphia, was enjoying herself.

Reporter: What's your technique?

“I'm making shingles with the pretzels and then I have life savers across the top and like candy rope around the sides,” she explained. “And then I'm going to put gummy bears, like protecting the house almost.”

Owner Joel Singer says the mistake that people make when making their own gingerbread houses at home is they rush the process.

He advises "building it over several days instead of trying to do it at once.

"Most people try to do it all at once and try to load it up when it’s not set," he said. “It falls apart!"
