PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A student was rushed to the hospital Thursday afternoon after an incident at a Philadelphia elementary school.

Police say a 12-year-old girl used a pair of scissors to stab an 11-year-old boy in the head.

This happened toward the end of the school day at John Barry Elementary School at 59th and Race streets in West Philadelphia.

The girl, a sixth-grader, is in police custody.

Her classmate, also in sixth grade, was taken to the Children's Hospital. Police say he's in stable condition.

It is unknown what led to the stabbing, if the scissors were issued by the school or if the girl brought them with her inside the building.

The school district says they are working with police in the investigation, and call violence like this "unacceptable."
