ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Atlantic City held its grand opening with the type of fanfare only they could create.

It took an hour of speeches to get the crowd in the Etess Arena to the moment they came for, as more than two dozen guitars were shattered on the stage by stars, executives and politicians.

CEO Jim Allen said this place is here to stay.

"You don't have to worry about some of the challenges of Atlantic City's past, where there's too much debt," he said at the grand opening. "Can't pay the interest. Can't reinvest in the property. This property is debt free."

Not to mention, it sold out all weekend.

Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam thanked all involved for believing and investing in his town at a time when many others wouldn't.

"I'm telling you, Atlantic City is a sure bet," Gilliam said, "and with Hard Rock in Atlantic City and the entertainment and the synergy they've brought to this town, it gives me great pleasure to say welcome."

Nearly 4,000 people are employed at the Hard Rock full time. The facility will center more on entertainment than gaming, although they did open the casino early once the state gave the go ahead.

They've had to scramble to get to this point. Not all the rooms have hot water yet, and it'll be awhile before the sports book is up and running here. But the crowd doesn't seem to mind. They just want to get to the casino, or even the buffet.
