PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The U.S. National Weather Servce has issued a heat advisory for Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs through Thursday evening.

The advisory is in effect from 3:19 p.m. Wednesday through 7 p.m. Thursday.

A heat advisory means that a period of excessively hot humid weather is expected.

Maximum temperatures were expected to be in the lower 90s Wednesday afternoon and again on Thursday afternoon. Overnight lows are expected to be in the lower to mid 70s.

Officials warn the excessive heat will create a health risk, especially for the elderly and for those with pre-existing health issues.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned environment, if possible, and are asked to check on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Officials also are warning anyone who works or spends time outside to take extra precautions.
