Heat advisory Tuesday; Elkins Park School, Cheltenham High School closing early

Excessively hot, humid weather increases the risk for health problems.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two schools have announced that they will be closing early Tuesday because of high temperatures. Elkins Park School will dismiss students at noon, and Cheltenham High School will be send students home at 11:15 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the following counties in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and South Jersey: New Castle, Mercer, Gloucester, Camden, Northwestern Burlington, Delaware, Philadelphia, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks,

Maximum temperatures are expected to be in the lower and mid-90s Tuesday afternoon with a heat index as high as 104 degrees. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s on Wednesday afternoon with a heat index as high as 100 degrees.

Excessively hot, humid weather increases the risk for heat-related health problems, especially for the elderly and for those with pre-existing conditions. Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids and to stay in an air-conditioned environment, if possible; to check on elderly relatives and neighbors; and to take extra precautions if working outdoors. Avoid strenuous activities until temperatures drop in the evening. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent breaks.
