PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's the most wonderful time of the year, and also among the most hectic. But taking a second look for holiday hazards could be the best gift you give your family this year.

Safety never takes a holiday. Just ask Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention for the Philadelphia Fire Department Jim Reninger.

"The leading cause of fire in Philadelphia these days is cooking fires. You can't walk away and watch the football game. Keep safety in the forefront of your mind when it comes to cooking and when it comes to your Christmas decorations," he said.

Which means if you are frying a Christmas turkey, it needs to be out on the driveway, not a wood deck, and a good distance away from the house. The turkey needs to be defrosted and dry.

Retired Chief Chip Lillie from Middletown Fire Company in Media addresses decorations.

"You want to give the light strings the once over to make sure your cat didn't nibble on them last Christmas, that nothing is frayed, the plugs look ok. The star or the angel on the top of the tree that has been passed down, that the wiring is still intact. If it is older, this may be the year to replace it," Lillie said.

Both say outside decorations require extension cords rated for outdoor use and plugged into a ground fault outlet.
