As the holidays approach, so do the stresses

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This week marks the start of the busy holiday season with Thanksgiving a few days away. As the celebrating starts, so does the stress. 

Here are some tips on how to ease the pressure.  

"I see an increase of excitement, happiness, an increase in expectations," said Penn Medicine clinical psychologist Thea Gallagher.

And that means stress, she adds. 

"You have memories of holidays going a certain way or expectations of friends or family or expectations of yourself to act a certain way," she said. 

Gallagher says to focus on things that are meaningful to you and the person you want to be, and don't try to do everything all at once. 

If someone is dealing with the stress of family dynamics, "Maybe plan for what dynamic they might encounter, what they've seen go well in past, what hasn't gone so well, how they can maybe navigate those better," she said. 

Keep your eye on the positive, she says, and above all else, be thankful in the moment. 

"You gotta fight for your own happiness and try to let some things go," Gallagher said.
