TRENTON (KYW Newsradio) — If you're traveling between Trenton, New Jersey, and Bucks County, it's hard to miss that famous sign on the Lower Trenton Bridge.

"Folks generally know it as the 'Trenton Makes Bridge,'" said Joe Resta with the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. "The slogan 'Trenton Makes/The World Takes' is in 9'6" letters on that bridge."

That sign usually shines bright, its reflection illuminating the Delaware River beneath it, but for the most part, the bridge has been in the dark since last summer, when construction on a new project began.

"We've replaced the lighting system with programmable LEDs," explained Resta.

Those were unveiled during a relighting ceremony Thursday night, where Resta and other officials talked about the importance of the sign and the lights to the community.

"Depending on your age and depending on your knowledge base of the area, they mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people," said Resta.

He talked about the benefits of the new lights, which include being more efficient and reliable. They also now feature 16 million color variations.

"It helps us kind of reconnect that sign in an iconic fashion with the community," said Resta. "If there is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we can turn them pink. We can turn them colors for the various holidays, for July 4th, for Flag Day, those types of days."

Green lights were already tested out during the Eagles Super Bowl run this year.

Fun fact: This relighting took place on the 100-year anniversary of when the bridge became free to cross.
