PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - If you've been to Old City lately you may have noticed part of Independence Mall is currently fenced off.

That's because of a pro bono project by BrightView Landscapes -- headquartered in Plymouth Meeting.

"To completely remake the Independence Mall landscape," explained the companies Vice President of Communications Fred Jacobs. "That's the Mall that's bounded by the Liberty Bell Center on one side and Independence Hall on the other."

The project began as soon as the weather started warming up.

"Completely replacing that sod," Jacobs said of the specific work that's being done. "Repairing and replacing much of the irrigation system that provides water to that Mall, and then rehabbing all of the gardens that surround the Mall."

He said he's looking forward to seeing the landscape "return to its original glory."

"The Independence Mall area receives so much foot traffic that much greater stresses were placed on that landscape than any other part of the park," added Jacobs, "so I think when we're finished it's going to look absolutely beautiful."

Expect the area to remain fenced off until early May at the earliest. Jacobs said that will allow the sod to take root properly and get established.

BrightView will also maintain the landscape for one year.
