PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Ice cream lovers in Philadelphia were shocked this weekend to learn Capogiro Gelato stores were closing, which has four locations throughout the city.

Sunday was last call. At the Capogiro on 13th Street, people waited in a line that stretched outside the building on this chilly day, to enjoy one final cool treat.

"Really bummed," said Holly Peltz Mills, who lives in town. "It's like an institution here. I always take visitors here and everyone here. It's a really good, local place, it adds a lot of character to the city, it's unique."

"A little shocked and sad," added Tori Gazzara. "I bring people here who come to visit the city and everyone really enjoys it and everybody loved getting the free samples and being able to try everything."

Capogiro came highly recommended for Sarah Thomas.

"I was devastated," she said when asked how she reacted to the news its closing. "I had just told someone who was new to town that they needed to come to Capogiro because it's the best gelato."

Thomas described eating this gelato "heaven in your mouth."

"I'm really hoping they make a comeback at some point," she added.

There was a sign sitting on the counter at the 13th Street store encouraging people to donate to a GoFundMe page that's been set up to "Save Capogiro - Keep Philly Sweet."
