(CNN) -- Hit BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey will return for a one-off Christmas special, its star and writer James Corden has confirmed.

The show, which followed the ordinary love story between its eponymous couple and enjoyed a hugely successful three-series run, ended on New Year's Day 2010.

It will be revived a full decade later, Corden revealed on Twitter, posting a picture of the script for the episode.

He said he and fellow writer Ruth Jones "have been keeping this secret for a while."

The BAFTA-winning breakout hit launched the career of Corden, now host of "The Late Late Show" on CBS.

The show ran for 19 episodes over three seasons, and also aired a Christmas special in 2008. It paired the level-headed Gavin, from Essex in England, with the bubbly Stacey from the town of Barry in South Wales.

After getting to know each other on work calls, they meet and embark on a long-distance relationship which quickly becomes serious, uniting their quirky families and friends in the process.

"Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey -- where they might be today and what their lives might look like," Corden and Jones said in a statement.

"And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We've loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy," they added.

"We're so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."

As well as stars Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, members of the show's wider cast will all return, including Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman.

Originally aired on BBC Three, Gavin & Stacey was moved to BBC One to capitalize on its success, with over 10 million people watching its final episode.
