PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Labor unions are uniting in the fight over immigration.

Thousands of union workers from up and down the East Coast gathered at Penn's Landing Wednesday afternoon to stand against the Trump administration's immigration policies.

"It's the most immoral, un-American thing that could occur," said D. Taylor, president of the labor union UNITE HERE.

Taylor said they came together to show solidarity for families separated and detained at the border.

"We want to make sure labor is at the table," he continued. "We don't care whether you're white, black, Latino, Asian, male, female, straight, gay — doesn't matter. That's just the wrong thing to separate families."

Pennsylvania Rep. Bob Brady also attended the rally. He said he wants to encourage his colleagues in Washington, D.C. to put together fair immigration legislation.

"They won't even put my bill for a vote up on the floor," he said.

Brady added that unions have strength in numbers, and they'll make sure their voices are heard.

"Unions got heart, and they're being persecuted, too, by the administration," he said. "Their vote counts and they're not going to be voting for people who aren't for immigration."
