PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia authorities have charged the man they say was threatening police officers with a knife earlier this week. And they have named the officer who shot him.

Around 10:15 Monday night, police say officer Mateo Garcia-Cardona and his partner saw a car moving in reverse along East Wishart Street near Front Street. Eventually a man fell out of the car with a box cutter.

Officials say the cops told the man, 31-year-old Darin Lee, repeatedly to drop the knife, but they say he continued to ignore them and moved closer and closer to them.

Eventually Garcia-Cardona shot Lee in the chest. Lee was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition. But he is now charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, and related offenses.

Garcia-Cordona remains on desk duty, as the internal investigation into the indident continues.
